Kelvin and I started attending the Christopher Leadership Course in Effective Speaking last week. It's a 12-week course and it teaches you about speaking techniques, such as reading out loud, talking about an object, introducing other people, preparing a speech. Tonight was the 2nd class and I can already tell that I is wonderful.

The teachers are all volunteers and were all past students of the course. You can tell that they are very enthuasiastic about teaching the course. They make the class so fun!

I always thought that speaking in front of people is a natural gift. Sure, some people are not shy to speak out. But giving a talk is different from just rambling on and talking to people, and after a couple of classes, I realize that there are techniques to be an effective speaker. It is not a natural born ability and can be learned and mastered. At the end of each class, one of the instructors gives a "Christopher talk." I really hope that at the end of the 12 weeks, I can stand in front of an audience and show such calm and confidence without any cue cards!

I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to improve their public speaking. Check out the website for the next session in September or January!

Scrambling for the new chairs

Something hilarious happened at work today. Some time in the morning, some people started grabbing these boxes of new office chairs that were stashed in the corner (I'm not sure when they came in). My co-worker said to me, "There are new chairs. You want one? I'll grab one for you cuz it's quite heavy." Well, I really don't find my existing desk chair comfortable so of course I want a new one. Then we spent 15 min or so opening the box and assembling the chair.

About an hour later, we found out that those new chairs are not for us (not for replacing our existing chairs), but they are for the meeting rooms, so that all the meeting rooms would have nice, uniform chairs. Well, I suppose that's important when we have clients and outside people come. The I.T. guy sits in our quadrant, and I saw the VP and another senior person come by and ask "Who gave them the permission to take the chairs?" The I.T. guy (he also does every miscellaneous stuff in the office) had to send a "nice" sounding e-mail telling everyone that the chairs are for the meeting rooms, and if you have a chair, please bring it to a meeting room. Also, if you don't like your chair, you can exchange for one of the existing chairs in the meeting rooms. Another thing, if you helped to assemble the chairs, please also be responsible for taking the garbage outside the office.

Well, I was a little disappointed for not getting a new chair, b/c the new chair is more comfortable and supports better posture. But the whole situation is just very funny. A mad scramble for new chairs and a whole bunch of people assmebling them only to find that the chairs are not for them! I bet the I.T. guy just didn't say anything b/c he's getting a bunch of people assembling 30 chairs for him! Also, it also shows that there are too many Chinese people working at my company. You know, the whole greediness and "I don't wannna miss out" attitude. Yes, I admit, that I'm like that too!

Children's bedtimes

I read an article in the Globe and Mail today about how kid's bedtimes are getting later and later, and this in turn is affecting the kid's attention, behaviour, and emotional/psychological growth. In the example in the article, the 6-year old was playing video games after dinner in HIS ROOM and the parents had to struggle with the kid to get to bed for 1.5 hours. By the time he has fallen asleep, it is 9:30pm.

Apparently, perhaps more than 20 years ago, most 5-6 year old kids sleep at 7pm-8pm. The biggest problems are with the parents. They let their kids be in control over them. Imagine, having a TV and video game console inside a 6-year old bedroom! How ridiculous! No wonder the kid doesn't wanna go to bed!

Hmm...somehow I don't have any recollection of sleeping that early, but I could be wrong. In the busy busy school work life of a typical HK primary school student, there is so much homework after school, I don't think I went to be until at least 9:30pm-10pm. But then I went to afternoon session of school, so that's a different story.

Come to think of it. I don't even get off work until at least 7pm right now. Woww...and a 5-year old kid should sleep around that time. Haha..no wonder there are so few married women with kids at my company!

If you are interested in reading the article here it is.

Real life simpsons intro

All set for HK

Yea! Finally go my ticket to HK. I'll be going for 2 weeks (17 days) to HK and hopefully join a tour to Beijing! It was not easy for me to get my manager to sign the vacation form. I've had to asked him more than a few times and he keeps saying "I still need to think about it." Well, me going away for 2 weeks isn't going to affect the schedule that significantly! I'm just glad that he finally signed that form! My co-worker just came back from a trip to HK and Japan and boy, is she making me excited! I haven't been back to HK in 7 years and lots of things have changed. I'm really looking forward to all the shopping, the street markets, and the good food!!

Le Select Bistro

Kelvin and I went to Le Select Bistro with another friend a couple of weeks ago. It was a day of where I learned the important lesson to trust myself more than to trust others.

Kelvin and I wanted to get our flight tickets yesterday morning. Kelvin said that his brother asked for him whether the travel agent will be at work today. But we went there and she wasn't there. For some weird reason I already had a gut feeling that she wouldn't be there. We got "lo dim" by his bro man!!

In the afternoon, we went to Staples Business Depot at 1st Markham to get his design fair poster printed. The guy at the copy centre took down the dimensions and calculated the cost for us. But then he said that the machine is broken right now and someone will be here to fix it on Monday. He couldn't guarantee us that it'll be printed by Monday. You know how some people are the "kick him once and he moves 1 step?" He's exactly the type. As we were leaving, I thought that maybe I'll ask him whether another Staples would be able to print it for us. He says maybe the one at Markham Rd. and 14th. We asked him if he could ask for us and we saw that he went inside and called the other location. Fine fine. He told us that they could print it too and directed us to go there. Then I remembered 1 more thing: when does it close. Geez, he won't even tell me if I don't ask him. He says, that store is not open 24hours. "So when does it close?" We asked. He said, "Uh...the normal Sunday closing time...at 6 I think." It was 5pm then.

So we went to the store at Markham/14th. Well, guess what, they couldn't print it there because their machine is not big enough. Only the one at 1st Markham (which is the Staples head copy store) could print it. We got really pissed. Stupid staff at the 1st Markham store that was on training. Dammit...we gave him the dimensions 1m x 0.8m. If he was responsible enough, he would have asked if other stores could also print posters as big as that. He obviously didn't know anything and just told us to go there. Never listen to some part-time dude again and listen more to my intuition.

So we drove all the way back to Kinkos at woodbine/hwy 7 to get the stupid poster printed. Well, it's almost $60 more expensive at Kinkos but what you get is reliable and professional service. Not some stupid part-time on-training dude who was too irresponsible to ask someone else. Your job is to provide customer service and he failed miserably.

It's not like I want that guy to lose his job. But I'm gonna call the store tomorrow and speak to the manager. Because I want him to learn the lesson that it's irresponsible to provide that kind of service to customers, and he better learn how to be more reliable and responsible or he'll definitely suffer in future jobs.

Lazy waitresses

Gosh...were the waitresses at this Japanese restaurant that Kelvin and I went to on Friday LAZY! For some reason, we couldn't find Sushi Time on Bloor b/c it moved across the street, so we just walked into another Jap restaurant on Bloor near Bathurst. We saw that there were a lot of people and even some are waiting so we thought it must be decent cuz it is so busy.

Well, were we ever wrong! Even though a table has freed up, nobody served us to lead us to our seats until we asked them. We were not given tea until we asked. And the food took half and hour and was pretty bad. I mean, I can wrap better sushi than that!!

But the bad food and bad service brought us some interesting observations. There were 3 waitresses there: 2 were younger and 1 was older who was probably the lady owner. Not long after we sat down, the table of 6 behind us left. Believe it or not, almost half an hour after the table left, the table was still not cleared!!! Those 2 younger waitresses don't do anything except take orders, bring food to customers and bring them the bill. They're always at the back of the restaurant and kept walking around. Amazingly, they'll walk past a dirty, uncleaned table without a second look. Worst off, I even saw them dump some garbage from another table onto the uncleaned table. They were unbelievably lazy! They just don't like to clean dishes b/c "Oh, I'll get my hands dirty!!!" Geeeez

It was around 9-something at night and there weren't any more people waiting for tables. At that time, 3 dirty and uncleaned tables with dishes have already accumulated. Finally, the poor older lady ownder took a large tray and cleaned all three tables! We were wondering why she doesn't just fire the other 2 waitresses! She just seems too nice!

Now we knew why the restaurant was so busy! It's because the turnaround of tables is slow due to the long wait of serving and making the food. What Kelvin and I couldn't figure out is why still so many people go there, including many non-Asian people. I figured it's only because it's a good location.

Bad food and bad service plus lazy-ass waitresses. We ended only giving them a $2 tip. The restaurant is Mariko Japanese Restaurant on 551 Bloor St. West. Yeah, I'm bad-mouthing them!

I should go buy the lottery!

The most ridiculous thing happened at work today. One of our design databases came back from a metal spin and strangely, the part we fixed worked, but another part of the chip that was not touched did not work at all for all the chips. We finally figured that there was a short in the database. How did that happen and still manage to pass DRC and LVS??? VERY strangely, something went wrong during the compression using gzip. For some reason, either there is something wrong with the machine, memory, or OS, the compression corrupts the file. But still, what are the chances that the corruption happened on the same metal layer that we changed (out of like 20-something layers)??? The corruption of a few bits resulted in a very nice and proper looking short in the metal! That's why I say I should go buy the lottery.

Gosh...made me so nervous today. I HATE when something likes this happens b/c I always fear that I did something careless. But thankfully it wasn't. Come on, for super important stuff like this I always double check, triple check everything. I would have never thought that some errors in the stupid linux machine would have caused gzip to corrupt the file.

Haha...the VP half-jokingly said that the extra few K's $$$ re-tapeout is gonna cost is coming out of somebody's pay-cheque!

表達愛意時卻遭到拒絕

This is pretty cute! After a month of finger hurting, I finally have some kind of progress. My fingers have developed callouses so they don't hurt as much anymore (yea)! Also, I've some basic chords and strumming methods. I'm still having difficulties playing some chords and getting some strings to ring clearly and also changing chords quickly enough. Hopefully with some more practice I can have some basic playing skills! And thx to Siu Yin for helping me change my guitar strings.

And guess where I got my guitar? It was at a garage sale on my street last summer. I saw a guitar amongst the large amounts of old junk in the garage and asked the guy to sell the guitar for me for $10. Not too bad.

I find that you always need to have some goals in life, whether big or small.

LOTR Musical Review

I saw the LOTR musical matinee show today at the Princess of Wales theatre. Overall I was impressed with the sets, special effects, and the acting of the show. But I think the music and the overall experience came out short.

First of all, LOTR is not really classified as a "musical." I think officially the producers don't even refer to it as a musical. A theatrical production would be more like it. It's not your typical musical like Phantom of the Opera where the actors just mostly sing throughout the show. Actually, most of the show is dialogue with some musical numbers, duets, solos, and background music to go along with the story.

The setting is the most impressive part of the show. It establishes the overall Middle Earth setting very well. Especially well done are the scenes at the Elves' places in Rivendell and Lotherein.

Even though there is no way a theatrical production can have the special effects that the movie has. However, I was hoping the music would compensate to establish a good mood. For sure, there is no typical broadway musical number, nor was that expected. But most of the music is not too memorable, except for a duet between Frodo and Sam. The music sung by the Hobbits were well fitting, but the rest of the score is alrite, just not very memorable. The movie music was MUCH better. Even after seeing the show, I can't remember much of the music, which I think is a disappointmnet.

The cast was very good though, especially Frodo, Sam, and GOLLUM. omg...Gollum was amazing, perhaps even better than the movie, because he is no special effect! (Even though the movie Gollum was actually acted by a person, but still, most of his facial expressions and such were from special effects.) Gollum was just excellent, especially in the scene where he was debating whether or not to steal the ring from Frodo as he and Sam were sleeping. Frodo and Sam were also very very good. Most disappointing was Gandalf, as he did not show the power that was required of him.

The show consisted of 3 acts, with 2 intermissions in between. The 1st act was very well done, mostly it was about Frodo leaving the shire and the forming of the fellowship. However, the 3rd act felt rushed and the final battle and events happened all too quickly. It didn't feel like a climax of the show. Maybe in 6 months after some refinement it will be better.

Overall, the show is original. But maybe I like musicals that are like more traditional musicals, like Phantom or Mamma Mia. I find the music of LOTR not too spectacular and the ending is too weak. Also, the battle scenes were limited, as you would expect. Setting and cast are good. It was definitely not the amazing "WOW" spectable like the movies. If you want to go see it, I would receommend seeing it maybe 3-6 months from now, when the show is more mature.

Olympic thoughts

Alright, I've abandoned this blog for around 2 months! Can't believe almost 2 months has passed in the new year already!

I always love watching the Olympics. I think a big reason is that in elementary school the teachers always do an Olympic unit at school so I've always been interested in the Olympic sports. And I feel proud cheering for Canada.

As for the Canadian men's hockey team, I can't say I'm very proud of them after yesterday's 2-0 loss to Switzerland and today's lost to Finland. Two straight games without a goal??? Unbelievable. Well, Kelvin already said in the beginning that Canada is already starting off on the wrong foot admist the distractions surrounding the 'Betsky' scandal. Those Canadian hockey players are just not playing with their heart. Look at the Finns! They have such good chemistry and teamwork. Wasted my two days b/c I watched both losing games. Well, I'll stop watching them when I'm at work and see what happens.

Holiday eating feasts

Every Christmas and New Year holiday means plenty of yummy holiday eating feasts, and this year is no exception! The main point is whether we can appreciate people's strength and overlook their weaknesses.

Sometimes I get very frustrated because of a person's weaknesses, especially if it is someone unavoidable, like people in your family. I get angry because I think I get unfair treatment; I get bitter because I wonder: "Why are they so hard on me even though I try so hard? Why do I get picked so much while they seem oblivious to other things, even thought it is so obvious?"

For a long time in my life, I felt a sort of inner resentment. However, in a way I felt very sad and helpless. You know the feeling of feeling helpless when you see something is wrong but you can't do anything to improve the situation? What do you do in such situations? I have tried to speak out, but I get unfavourable reception in return or the situation remains the same. I eventually came to the conclusion that there is nothing I can do and all I can do is adhere to the "silence is golden" proverb.

Kelvin helped me to see things from a new perspective. Some things are just the way they are and no matter how much you try to do something, things still won't change. But an event may just happen and instantly change the situation. It's not controlled by what you do or how much you want it to happen. It just is. You just have to look on the bright side.

After thinking about that point for awhile, I realized that God has a plan for each of us. He gave us both different strengths and weaknesses. He gave us free will to decide what road to take. We are the ones responsible for our own actions. So instead of feeling bitterness, resentment, or helplessness, I'm trying to look on the bright side. Appreciate a person's strength. And I pray for the person that eventually nature will take its course and things would change for the better.

St. Therese of Liseux, the Little Flower, is such a wonderful saint not because she had big, significant achievements, but because of her perfect and simple life and in particular, her "Little Way." Humbleness really is a virtue that is very hard to have. When there is nothing you can do, do small things in your "Little Way."

Preparation

What a dreary month of November! I can't believe that the parent of another friend of mine passed away. And it happened to one of the nicest and humble people that I know: Ceci Ng. Ceci is someone who I was lucky enough to meet at UTCCC. It was her who had the persistence to start UTCCC a few years ago even with initial hardships. After UT, she spent so much time and energy to build the youth community at St. Agnes, even though she is so busy all the time. She really is someone that I admire.

Many of us were shocked by her father's passing in HK. A bunch of St. Agnes youths went to mass together on Monday night for a mass to remember her father. It hurts me to see Ceci's eyes all puffy from the crying. She really doesn't deserve this happening to her. And she is getting married next year too!

The death of a loved one is never easy to accept, but death is one of the facts of life that will surely come and ready to strike any time. A few of the gospels in the past month were about being prepared for the coming of Christ and for judgement day, such as the parable of the 10 girls going to a wedding banquet. 5 of the girls were wise and brought extra oil for their lamps, and 5 were foolish and did not. When they ran out of oil for the lamps, they had to go to the store to buy some. While they were gone, the groom came and the 5 wise girls went in to the wedding banquet. When the 5 foolish girls came back and knocked on the door, they were refused.

These events that happened to my friends make me think about my own life and my own preparation, or lack of it. I'm sure not many people really think they are prepared to die soon, especially when you are young. I think that I still have so many things to do. I have done so many things that I feel that I shouldn't have done, and I somehow always say to myself, "Later I will improve. I will be a better person. I will be more prepared." But everything happens for a reason and it's somehow part of God's plan for us. I know that I just need to listen to His voice more. But it's so hard. No wonder they say it's so much harder to take the road less travelled.

Euthanasia

There's been a lot of discussion among Church circles of Bill C-407, which amends section 222 of the criminal code that deals with homicide. Although it has already passed first reading, it will unlikely be passed. This does not mean that the Liberals will not pass another Euthanasia bill in the future (if they remain in government). The bill may not be passed b/c the Liberals probably do not agree with the exact terms in the bill as proposed by the Bloc Quebecois MP.

Here is a site with some explanation of the bill: http://www.stopbillc-407.com/index.htm

Euthanasia or assisted suicide is a complicated topic. Although the majority of us would agree that administering a means to end a person's life (such as lethal injection) is wrong, there are many many more cases in "grey" area. When you're in such a situation of seeing your loved ones in pain, it is hard to decide whether what really constitutes right and wrong.

The Catholic Church teaches that a person is bound to use ordinary means in regards to health care. Ordinary means (food and water are examples) would be those which offer reasonable hope of benefit and are not unduly burdensome to either the patient or the family.

A person may, but is not bound, to use extraordinary means to treat a patient. These means do not offer reasonable hope of benefit and may be excessively burdensome to either the patient or the family. However, what really constitutes as extraordinary means is getting harder and harder to determine today.

I read an example on the internet about this. A person was dying of prostate cancer, which had metastasised throughout his body. When I saw him last in the hospital, he had gone into a coma and was being fed intravenously and was breathing with a respirator. His kidneys had failed. The doctors told the family that there was nothing more they could do and the situation was irreversible. At that point, the medical technology was not providing any hope of recovery or benefit, but rather was merely prolonging the death process. The family decided to turn-off the respirator, which had now become an extraordinary means, and minutes later my friend went to meet his Lord. This action was morally permissible and different from purposefully terminating life.

Our UTCCC oldtimers group was talking about euthanasia the other day. We all know that euthanasia is wrong. But some of us even admit that we would rather die if we were in the situation of enduring immeasurable pain with a terminal disease.

All this talk about euthanasia made me think of my grandmother's case. She already had a few mini-strokes and we all know that the strokes would come more frequent. One time, she was sent to the hospital. The doctor at emergency at first refused to admit her in to pallative care and wanted to send her back to the nursing home. He even said, "She's 94 years old! What do you guys expect?" What an attitude. We all knew that grandma would not get better, but at least we do not want her to starve to death. If she returned to the nursing home, she wouldn't be able to eat. So with some insistence she was admitted and was put on IV so that some nutrients and water and get to her. Within a couple of days, she was much better and she returned to the nursing home. However, after 3 days she went back to the hospital again, stayed for a week, and returned to the nursing home again. She then passed away peacefully after a few days in the nursing home.

I think that everyone should be entited to at least food and water. During my grandma's first admittance to the hospital, she did get better with the IV attached, and she managed to talk to us and I was really touched by my last moments with her. If my family didn't insist, the doctor would have refused to let her stay and just sent her back to the nursing home, where she'll probably just starve and dehydrate. If we have done that, would that be wrong?

Even if bill C-407 is not passed, you can count on another euthanasia bill being debated in the House of Commons in the near future. If such a bill is passed, you can imagine Canada following the Netherlands in allowing assisted suicide. People with disabilities would be severely in jeapardy, b/c they may not even get to make the decision and they'll be killed in order to lessen the"burden." There'll be a list of "right to die" doctors who will be more than happy to "refer someone to death." The Netherlands is truly a very scary place. Let's not have this happen to Canada!

Women, as explained by engineers

My friend Raj sent me this. They look amazing! Apprently, they are already booked till Dec 2006. Geez!
Their website took forever to load tho.

I was talking to an engaged couple a few weeks ago. Getting married is all about how much $$$ you have, and the wedding banquet and wedding pictures are the top two money grabbers! Of course, it's a once in a lifetime thing so obviously you will fork over the money. But weddings seem more like putting on a show to all your friends and relatives, yet it is something that you have to do. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an anti-marriage person! ^_^ It's just all that planning for 1 day...no wonder they have professional wedding planners.

Treasure the people in your life

Not only the weather was gloomy, but today is truly a sad sad day.

Muf's mommy passed away today from cancer. I couldn't believe it when I heard from Ant. It was only a few months...too quick. I really thought she would recover. I can't even imagine how Muf would be feeling now. Her mom can't be witness to many of her happiest moments in life: her convo, her wedding, her 1st child. That's why the world is so unfair. Why would someone who doesn't even smoke get lung cancer? Muf: we are all praying for you and your family. HEX will be here for you.

There are just too many unexpected things that may happen in life. Come to think of it, the people that you are with most are the people that you most take for granted. It gave me a reality check to thank God for his blessings and bestowing me with many people who love me.

In this month of November, please take a moment to pray for the souls of purgatory, especially your beloved ones.

My new blog/Freebies at work

Yes, I've finally succumbed to the blog world after all this time. What's the reason? Lately, many circumstances and observations have led me to think "That's a thought. I need to write this down!" I don't really know why I have the sudden urge, perhaps my opinion is somehow important in this world! ^_^

There was a free-for-all of keyboards and computer cases at work today. I seriously don't know why the I.T. guy is giving them out. Within 15 seconds after that e-mail was sent out, I already see a swarm of people heading towards the window area to grab their own share of their freebies. Of course everyone in my area naturally joined in the escapade. I got a Microsoft keyboard and few other people took computer cases. When asked about why they took a computer case, they said, "I don't know what I'm gonna do with it!" It's just one of those things - "It's free. Everyone took something, so I should take something too, even though I don't know why." Naturally, people (esp. Chinese people) cannot lose out, if you know what I mean!
